I saw a van yesterday with "Fuck Joe Biden" painted on the side of it. I literally cannot drive 5 minutes without seeing a home or business fully draped in a variety of flags and signs, most rural areas were 65% or higher and are showy about who they prefer. Many places around here closed, the rest are struggling to stay open.Īnd yeah rural MI is Trump country. Rural restaurants have been hammered the last 18 months. You'll be driving a lot farther than you're used to for activities. If you're in a bigger town like Alpena, you'll be driving all the way to Gaylord or Traverse or Sault Ste Marie for their games. If you've got a kid who plays basketball you may be driving an hour or more each way on Tuesday for their game. If you have kids you'll be driving them a lot, things are spread out. I can't justify paying $1.59 for a can of store brand black beans or $4 head of iceberg at Rogers' or Neiman's or Family Fare. I simplified a bit and make a trip to West Branch to an Aldi to stock up on staples maybe once a month or every 6 weeks. Groceries are also more expensive here, the staples cost considerably more than in the city. ![]() Of course, if you're a meat and potatoes family, you'll be fine. You'll be simplifying your cooking at home and taking longer trips to find speciality items. You'll also have 4 choices of apples, not 14. You're not going to find cilantro at the Rogers' Food Center in Glennie. You can get 95% of the daily life stuff in most smaller towns, but if you're used to buying high quality and big varieties of produce, you're going to have to make some adjustments on that front. If you're used to 2 day delivery, get un-used to it. Most of my deliveries are a week or more, even to a Locker or whatever. There is no same or 1 or 2 day Amazon Prime. Need a pair of jeans? How do you feel about getting them at WalMart or Tractor Supply? Those are your options, unless you want to drive to wherever there's a mall or order online. The local stores are also typically open 8-5 and maybe on Saturday, no runs to the hardware store after dinner. When you're doing a project, you better plan REALLY well or you're driving a lot. It's an hour and 40 minutes on a good day for me to get to Lowes, or 45 minutes to the nearest Home Depot. You're going to rely heavily on either ordering things or driving a long way to a big box. You can get building supplies like lumber and plumbing, you just can't really get design and interior supplies like light fixtures and plumbing fixtures. If you're doing a project, your purchasing options are going to be limited to things like Ace or Do-It Hardware, a Tractor Supply if you're near a bigger town like Standish or Tawas or local building centers where you have to special order many of the things you'd see at Lowe's or Home Depot. If you stick to state highways, you'll usually have service. Service is determined by address, do not believe what a realtor says, talk directly to the ISPs.Ĭell service varies. I have CenturyLink 60MB, if I lived on the other side of the main road, only satellite would be available. There is not great infrastructure for high speed in most areas outside the populated counties. Rural areas typically have one choice for internet, in many areas you may have to rely on satellite service. One thing to consider is access to.stuff. You can view property information, including parcel maps, and estimate supplemental taxes.I'm in rural Iosco County. This search tool is maintained by an independent data service.
